This quantitative study examined first-year university and community college students who were former Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) high school students. Participants in this study were students from groups that are underrepresented in higher education. In the first sample of 329 graduates, grade point average and college credit accrual in high school were found to be predictive of college success. A large proportion of AVID graduates at both community colleges and four-year colleges persisted into the second year of postsecondary education, but those at community colleges earned college credits at a slower rate. In the second sample, surveys of 91 AVID graduates revealed that students continued to use study habits and organizational strategies learned in AVID. Students at community colleges were more likely to use more organizational and individualized strategies, while students at universities were more likely to use strategies that involve engagement and interaction with other students.
