Compiled by a teacher, this handbook will serve as a guide to elementary teachers who want to provide students with an understanding of their American heritage. Classroom activities for use in a reading or social studies lesson are described. The activities are many and varied and include the following: developing a family tree; making a sandwich board using posterboard with some design or picture on the front to represent their group; constructing a time line; making a bulletin board which outlines the reasons people move from one place to another; learning how to examine old newspapers, deeds, county records and other local history sources; and taking field trips. To encourage students to learn about the customs of many different ethnic groups, the handbook suggests that teachers sponsor an ethnic festival. Specific suggestions for involving all the faculty including the math, gym, art and science teachers are provided. The publication ends with a short listing of additional resources and books.
