Goals and objectives, student activities, and evaluations are contained in this guide for a one-day scavenger hunt through the North End of Boston. The culmination of a unit involving urban planning and land-use problems, the field trip is intended to give students first-hand experience with city life and a better understanding of urban issues such as housing shortages, traffic flow, and ethnic enclaves. An introductory section covers preparation for the trip including discussion about getting lost, perceptions of urban violence, and encounters with minorities. Specific student activities are listed in the scavenger hunt directions, which require students (working in small groups with a nondirective adult) to observe the city around them, speak with people who live and work in the North End, visit historical sites, and find out about social problems such as the effect of urban renewal on local residents. Sample items from the scavenger hunt include "Why is Park St. Station important?""When was the North End populated mostly by the Irish?""Where can you buy rabbit in this area and how much does it cost per pound?"
