The Preservation of Paper Collections in Archives.
Adams, Cynthia Ann
The preservation methods used for paper collections in archives were studied through a survey of archives in the metropolitan Atlanta (Georgia) area. The preservation policy or program was studied, and the implications for conservators and preservation officers were noted. Twelve of 15 archives responded (response rate of 80 percent). Basic preservation methods were used in all of the archives, including boxing, encapsulating, and photocopying. Environmental care of paper artifacts was minimal. Six archives had disaster plans in place. Five archives had a written preservation policy, and four had comprehensive preservation programs with goals and objectives. Conservators and preservation officers had to play the role of advocate for preservation, although few actual conservators and preservation officers were employed. Most preservation activities were carried out by employees with other job titles. Nine tables present study findings. Three appendixes contain the two cover letters used, and the survey instrument.
