The purpose of this six-part booklet is to review the current status of genetically-based biologic technologies and to suggest how information about these technologies can be inserted into existing educational programs. Topic areas included in the six parts are: (1) genetically-based technologies in the curriculum; (2) genetic technologies (reviewing basic genetics and examining recombinant DNA and fermentation); (3) genetic technologies in medicine (discussing genetic screening and diagnosis, gene therapy, and hybridomas); (4) genetic technologies in agriculture (considering pests and pathogens, nitrogen fixation, photosynthesis, ability to withstand unfavorable environmental conditions, improving the storage of proteins in seeds, tissue culture, and livestock); (5) social and ethical issues in genetic technology (discussing safety, biotechnology as business, and the application of genetic technology to humans); and (6) the future of biotechnology.
