Music Education as a Mirror to Humane Education
Hansen, David T.
Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education, v16 n1 p95-100 Aug 2017
Music and philosophy travel together through time in human culture, and in this article, David Hansen responds to Randall Allsup's recent book, "Remixing the Classroom: Toward an Open Philosophy of Music Education." Hansen says that a singular feature of Randall's new book is how marvelously he demonstrates the organic union between music and philosophy. Although not a typical qualifier deployed for a scholarly text produced by a member of the academy, Hansen writes that he would call this book philosophically joyful, and a moving book whose prose is remarkably animated, motored by an underlying commitment to enriching and humanizing music education. Hansen feels that every note in the book seems essential to its overall structure and theme, and Randall demonstrates that to act upon the dignity of student, music, and teacher constitutes a more demanding task than operating in traditional systems of master-apprentice. To act in respect and in response to student, music, and oneself as educator--and all at one and the same time--is a challenging art, especially when the pressures of conducting music education within institutions that do not always have dignity as their primary concern is added.
