Bigham, Sarah G.; Hively, Dorothy E.; Toole, Georgiann H.
Education, v135 n2 p211-229 Win 2014
This study examined public school partners' expectations of teacher candidates and beginning teachers and the qualities that principals consider most important when hiring new teachers. Teachers in Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia (N = 130) responded to 37 Likert-style survey questions based upon the 100 school principals' interview questions and themes. Respondents indicated that characteristics related to professional demeanor and open-mindedness were most vital to success during teaching internships. Cooperating teachers also placed high value on broad skills and knowledge, including classroom management, knowledge of content area and time management skills. The quality that was the highest-ranked item for principals and public school teachers was a passion for teaching and working with students. Other qualities highly valued by both included content knowledge and classroom management techniques. Lifelong learning, experience with technology and professional appearance were highly valued by principals. Responses from the survey suggest that new teachers need multiple opportunities to develop professional demeanor and basic classroom skills.
