The All-Russian Geography Olympiad
Naumov, Alexey
International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education, v16 n3 p283-292 Aug 2007
The history of intellectual geography competitions for secondary school students in Russia (by that time--USSR) began after World War II, when the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University started to organise a yearly Geography Olympiad for Muscovite youngsters. Soon, organisers of this Olympiad decided to open it for secondary school students from the other provinces of the country. Students came to Moscow to participate in the Olympiad not only from the city itself and oblasts (provinces) surrounding the capital, but even from distant parts of the country such as Ukraine and Siberia. Since that time, the Moscow City Geography Olympiad (Open Olympiad of Lomonosov Moscow State University) welcomes secondary school students from all the grades where geography is taught (Grades 6-11) without restrictions related to residence. This article provides a description in detail on the upper rounds of the All-Russian Geography Olympiad yearly cycle. The Olympiad at school and municipal level is organised by the school authorities and the local administrators in charge of geographical education. (Contains 6 figures and 1 footnote.)
