For more than 20 years, Joel Michell has explicated the properties and requirements of quantitative measurement, in books, papers, conference papers, and workshops. In 1997, he published "Quantitative Science and the Definition of Measurement in Psychology." In his paper, Michell deals with facts about measurement. The author of this article contends that Michell's thesis has real-world consequences and people are living through them now. The most important of these is that while psychometricians have advanced their thinking and technical sophistication over the past 40 years, the practical consequences have been almost nonexistent except in the domain of educational testing and various examination scenarios.
