A Review of Supervision and Practice of School Psychology Interns in the High School Setting: Serving Students with Emotional Disturbance in Educational Settings

Supervision is essential to the development of school psychologists. Effective supervision cultivates professional competence and objectivity, enhances service delivery, encourages critical thinking and problem solving, and supports school psychologists to engage in continuous professional development activities. Yet, there is little information available about how school psychology practitioners as supervisors can help to support and guide the student-intern specifically when working to meet the needs of the Emotionally Disturbed (ED) adolescent student. This research explored the supervisor-supervisee dynamic within the high school setting and provided direction and evidence-based support for the supervisor on how to effectively guide the supervisee when working with the ED adolescent student population. The widespread lack of training and supervised practice in the supervision of school psychology within the high school environment verges on unethical practice since technically practicing as a supervisor without adequate training can be construed as practicing outside the area of expertise. This study (a) considered existing literature in the context of what is known from the broader supervision literature and provided essential elements for mastering the competencies and accountabilities of supervisory work, (b) discussed the relevance when working within the high school setting as it relates to the needs of the ED adolescent student and (c) reflected on next steps for the training, practice, and intervention supports of supervision in school psychology and needs within the ED adolescent student population. Results indicated a need for adequate training and support from supervisors. Additionally, university and field collaborations can better serve to streamline the link between supervision training, practice, and research. Implications for school psychology practitioners and supervisees were indicated. A list of materials was developed to match the needs of the supervisor and supervisee as they work together to support the ED adolescent student population.
