Scientists read, and so should students. Unfortunately, many high school teachers overlook science texts as a way to engage students in the work of scientists. This article addresses how to help students develop literacy skills by strategically reading a variety of science texts. Unfortunately, most science teachers aren't trained to teach literacy skills and may be overwhelmed by the prospect of figuring out how to incorporate reading skills into their instruction. This article addresses the problem with an overview of different types of science texts (popular texts, textbooks, and primary scientific literature) and corresponding strategic questions that will help students develop their literacy skills.
