Assessing the Vulnerability of Private and Public College Campuses in New Jersey to Domestic Terrorist Attacks
Drew, Christopher James
ProQuest LLC, D.Sc. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
Colleges and universities are among the United States of America's most vulnerable and exploitable targets for individuals and organizations seeking to cause harm and fear. This study specifically addressed the various vulnerabilities identified by those in charge of college campus public safety in New Jersey. The information gathered was very informative with respect to how they look at their jobs and also how the administration at each college/university perceives the ongoing possible threat of a domestic terrorist attack on their campus. This was a qualitative study, consisting of data collected from structured interviews. Participants included public safety directors from three public and four private schools. The study results revealed that these directors of public safety operate in the same arena, but the diverse make-up of both their administrations and their campuses were strong factors that affected how they approached their jobs and required tasks. Findings revealed that a full commitment to awareness, strong communication, regularly scheduled training, strong relationships with the surrounding law enforcement community, and a buy-in by all the stakeholders within their respective colleges/universities was key to combating and responding to acts of domestic terrorism on their campuses.
