Washington Community College Factbook Addendum A: Student Enrollments, Academic Year 1978-79.
Meier, Terre
In order to reveal trends in community college enrollments in Washington, student demographic and enrollment data for academic year 1978-79 were compiled and compared with figures for previous years. The study report provides annualized averages for full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollments for the years 1968-69 to 1978-79 and quarterly and annualized student enrollments by institutional intent (i.e., academic, occupational, or community service) for the same period. Quarterly enrollments are summarized systemwide and by district. Student characteristics that were focused upon in the study include age, sex, ethnic background, previous year's activities, veteran and residency status, credit-hour load, enrollment category, and headcount and FTE enrollments by time and location. Study findings for 1978-79 include the following: (1) 52.4% of the students were enrolled in an academic category, 46.2% in an occupational category, and 1.4% in a community services category; (2) of the 180,922 students enrolled, 22% were less than 21 years old; (3) female enrollments exceeded male enrollments by 10% (55% vs. 45%); (4) 4.34% of the students were from out of the state; (5) veteran enrollments dropped from 14% in 1975 to 6.51% in 1978; (6) 75.3% of the students were Caucasians; (7) 65% of the students were enrolled on a part-time basis; and (8) fall quarter FTE's increased by more than 463% between 1962 and 1978.
