Technology is defined differently depending on one's point of view, but in "Standards for Technological Literacy," technology is defined as "Human innovation…the generation of knowledge and processes…that solve problems and extend human capabilities" (ITEA/ITEEA 2000/2002/2007). The processes associated with the development of technology and engineering most often involve resources, such as materials, information, tools and machines, people, time, money, and energy (ITEA/ITEEA 2000/2002/2007). Technology is not science, but in the modern era, technology, engineering, and science work hand in hand. As technology is developed, humans have built upon that foundation with innovations, exponentially expanding their capabilities. This article examines mechanical, electrical, and medical technologies that have extended human capabilities.
