It is important that practical nurse (PN) educators be able to identify which students are likely to be successful in their programs. However, the majority of literature related to predicting success of nursing students has been done on baccalaureate nursing students in the university setting. This study sought to determine whether the same identified academic variables of grade point average (GPA) and standardized test scores used to predict nursing student success in the university environment could be used to predict academic success of the PN student in a community college setting. Three years of student data, totaling 111 records, were obtained from one PN program. Regression analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which pre-nursing GPA, scores from the standardized Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), and the number of co-requisites completed prior to entering the program could predict first semester success of these PN students. Results revealed that three of four subtest scores from the TEAS and the TEAS composite score were significant in predicting first semester success. There was no significant relationship found between either the pre-nursing GPA or co-requisites completed and first semester success.
