Women administrators in higher education must deal not only with the usual challenges facing administrators (decision-making, resolving conflict, and advancing professionally), but also with the effects of sex stereotyping. Women are not seen as decision-makers, nor as conflict-resolvers, and are often viewed as supporting personnel rather than people interested in professional development. To study these additional challenges, the 400 Kentucky members of the National Identification Program for the Advancement of Women in Higher Education were surveyed. As a result the challenges are divided into seven categories, those of: (1) acquiring the first administrative position; (2) dealing with social stereotypes on the job; (3) management skills; (4) dealing with the reward system; (5) conflict between personal and professional life; (6) professional advancement; and (7) the woman administrator who perceives no problems and therefore makes no attempt to overcome them. Specific remedies are suggested for individual women administrators, such as time and task management skills and resources. (MSE)
