The LD Teacher's Language Arts Companion[TM]: A Multisensory Approach.
Wadlington, Elizabeth M.; Currie, Paula S.
This book presents a multisensory approach for teaching language arts skills to students in grades 3-10 with learning disabilities. It is intended for teachers, parents, speech-language pathologists, and other professionals who work with students with learning disabilities. An introduction discusses multisensory instruction and the benefits of structured activities that involve auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic learning. It also lists the twelve English/Language Arts Standards developed by the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English. An Action Plan is provided to help teachers plan ways to meet students needs, work toward Individualized Education Program goals, show accountability, and get ready for parent conferences. The sheet is designed to record long-range plans for learning; however, it can be modified for daily use. Chapters contain multisensory activities in the following areas: (1) motivation, which includes a barriers to learning plan and a learning styles inventory; (2) listening and speaking; (3) reading; (4) written language; (6) content area skills; (7) social skills; and (8) home activities, which includes a form for an Individual Behavior Plan, tracking chart, and a behavior contract. Most chapters include resources and references. An appendix cross-references activities to related standards in a Standards Matrix. (CR)
