The VERSO Solution
Ballard, Terry
Library Journal, v133 n9 p30-32 May 2008
Every year, more and more reference sources go from print to online, from the stacks to the library's homepage. The librarians at Quinnipiac University's Arnold Bernhard Library in Hamden, Connecticut, realized that these subscriptions are more than the occasional web offering to supplement the library's mission. They have become an important collection in their own right and in most cases duplicate bound paper books on the reference shelves. While their library had the materials to offer the students, however, they needed a delivery mechanism for the electronic content that could be as simple as the reference shelf is for print. The idea for their Virtual Electronic Reference Source (VERSO) was born of certain limitations in their catalog in terms of remote access to reference materials. VERSO is a grassroots, homemade virtual reference tool. This article describes the conceptualization, development, and implementation of VERSO.
