This series of illustrated texts in beginning Swahili is a project of the Language Section of the Curriculum Development and Research Centre of the Ministry of Education, Nairobi, Kenya. The course is designed specifically for children who begin the study of Swahili as a second language in Standard (Grade) 4. Students' texts consist of Volumes 1 (in two parts), 2, 3 and 4, accompanied by Teacher's Books 1, 2, 3, and 4. All material in the Students' Books appears in Swahili; in the Teacher's Books, the step-by-step instructions for carrying out the drills and other suggestions for classroom work are presented in English, for "those teachers of Swahili in Kenya who are still improving their own Swahili." Emphasis throughout the course is on oral practice; presentation of structures is graded for difficulty. Supplementary exercises are provided at the end of the Students' Books. Vocabulary lists are given at the end of the Teacher's Books. (AMM)
