Occupational Therapy Approaches for Secondary Special Needs: Practical Classroom Strategies.
Jenkinson, Jill; Hyde, Tessa; Ahmad, Saffia
This reference manual on uses of occupational therapy techniques in British secondary schools is intended to help therapists to identify students' problems and then apply alternative strategies to improve classroom performance. Following an introductory chapter, chapter 1 defines 13 critical foundation skills (e.g., gross motor coordination, fine motor dexterity, and organizational skills), explains why students need to acquire them, considers implications for skill deficits, and gives remediation ideas for intervention. Chapter 2 addresses specific medical conditions and how the specific condition affects performance. These conditions include attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autistic spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, developmental coordination disorder, dystrophies and degenerative conditions, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Chapter 3 considers the following specific curriculum areas: English, mathematics, science, design and technology, information communication technology, history, geography, modern foreign languages, art, music, and physical education. The final chapter provides seven occupational therapy skills sheets. Six appendices offer various checklists, profiles, and schedules. Additional information includes equipment resources, suppliers' addresses, and a glossary. (Contains 20 references.) (DB)
