Computer graphics systems typically produce a single, machine-like character font. At most, these systems enable the user to (1) alter the aspect ratio (height-to-width ratio) of the characters, (2) specify a transformation matrix to slant the characters, and (3) define a virtual pen table to change the lineweight of the plotted characters. Despite this flexibility to modify the basic character font, discriminating architects and draftsmen have long criticized the artificial quality inherent to computer-generated text. In proposal drawings, and in artwork where the elements of style and flair are mandatory, the computer approach has been abandoned in favor of the manual approach. This paper presents the coordinate data used to define the sample architectural font and standard Leroy font. In addition, an algorithm is described which produces the fine, medium, and bold character styles that enhance the text capabilities of the traditional computer graphics system. (Author)
