This article presents snapshots of an innovative program in which performing actor, musician, and dancer TAs work as substitute teachers. Through STARRRs (Substitute Teachers for the Arts and 3Rs) Program, New York City principals hire professional performers as licensed substitute teachers. Actors, musicians, and dancers bring their craft into their schools' instructional day. To get this work, participants must have had experience working with urban youth and they must audition for a place in a 50-hour training session provided by the Actors Fund Work Program. STARRRs are more like street performers than conventional TAs. They are trained to teach in unorthodox and even madcap situations. In his column about the program published by "TAJ" in summer 2007, Nick Jaffe characterized STARRRs work as "Synthetic Guerrilla Improvisers in the Here and Now." The author presents a few tales of these pioneering teaching artists.
