An Analysis of the Perceptions of "U.S. News and World Report" College Ranking Systems by Enrollment Managers of American Jesuit Colleges and Universities
Stoltz, Adam C.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
The focus of this study involves the perceptions held by enrollment managers at the American Jesuit Catholic colleges and universities of national rankings of colleges and universities and the strategic use of this information. Enrollment management emerged within colleges and universities in response to increasing competition for incoming students. The term refers to the ability of higher education institutions to influence the number and characteristics of students as well as keep them enrolled in the college or university. At this time, more than 100 different ranking systems have been developed to aid potential students through the process of selecting a college or university. These systems use quality indicators to assemble each ranking, with a weighted score given to each institution. Examples of quality indicators include graduation rates, admission and retention rates, peer assessment, and financial resources. Each system's quality indicators vary in significance, resulting in a compilation that ranks the institutions according to scores received. The institutional ranking system "U.S. News and World Reports" ("USNWR") was examined as part of a dynamic relationship with enrollment management at the American Jesuit schools. Since the first publication of "USNWR" in 1983, college ranking systems have had a significant effect on college and university admissions. Many administrators denounce such rankings as superficial and arbitrary without focusing on true quality measures. This study used an online survey sent to each enrollment manager of the American Jesuit Catholic colleges and universities to determine perception of the influence of "U.S. News and World Report" on enrollment management practice. The findings allowed the author to gain an understanding of how higher education ranking services affect enrollment management.
