Since the 1950s, public education has been strongly affected by the Sputnik incident, growing awareness of discrimination, and national reports on the schools' mediocrity. But reaction to these developments has undervalued the importance of associative factors within curricula. Teachers must be experts in adolescent psychology as well as instructional technique. (KH)
