Girlfight the Power: Teaching Contemporary Feminism and Pop Culture
Bardsley, Alyson
Feminist Teacher: A Journal of the Practices, Theories, and Scholarship of Feminist Teaching, v16 n3 p189-204 Jun 2006
In this article, the author discusses a course she taught entitled, "Grrl Power and Beyond: Third Wave Feminism and Contemporary Popular Culture," in the interdisciplinary American Studies Program at her college. Here, she lays out her goals in designing the course, and the ways that her students, her circumstances, and her classroom experiences modified those goals. She describes some of the texts she used and some of the specific classroom techniques that she found especially interesting and beneficial, in hopes that they will be useful to anyone planning a similar course. She also explains how the texts and the class worked upon the students and upon her, which leads to some conclusions about the usefulness of thinking and speaking in terms of third wave feminism. Among other things, she talks about "Girlfight," a film which embodies many aspects of third wave feminism. (Contains 11 notes.)
