Park Forest Middle School STEM Education Fair 2010
Hughes, Bill
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v70 n2 p32-35 Oct 2010
Innovations from the United States have often led the world to new discoveries and solutions to complex problems. However, there are alarming indications that the United States is falling behind other countries in the ability to apply science, technology, engineering, and math to complex problems facing our world. In order for the country to maintain its position in global business and as a major innovator, there is a need for educators to rededicate their efforts in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). State College Area School District's Park Forest Middle School organized and implemented the state's first STEM Education interdisciplinary team. This group of science, technology education, and math teachers work in a cross-curricular format to develop engineering projects and events to enlighten their students, parents, and community members about these disciplines. In the fall of 2009, the school's building principal, Dr. Karen Wiser, challenged the faculty to come up with activities to brighten students' afternoons following the Pennsylvania PSSA tests. Within the next few hours, the STEM Education team met and painted the broad strokes of what would become known as the STEM Education Fair. This article presents a narrative of how to organize an event that will capture both the minds and imaginations of students while reaping accolades from administrators and community.
