Role Models and Informal STEM-Related Activities Positively Impact Female Interest in STEM

The United States' economy depends greatly on a citizenry that possesses scientific and technical skills within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for economic growth. In the past few decades, technological advancement has created a demand for a highly skilled workforce possessing scientific and mathematical knowledge. As a result, many occupations in STEM fields, which have the largest growth, will require individuals to obtain a bachelor's degree. In order to meet the labor needs of the workforce, the United States must examine ways to prepare all citizens for success in a technological future. This is especially true for women and minorities in STEM professions. The issue of females being underrepresented in STEM is multifaceted. In this article, the author briefly discusses the impact of role models and informal learning activities as strategies to encourage female interest in STEM-related areas.
