Design a Sculpting Material
Roman, Harry T.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v70 n4 p14-16 Dec 2010-Jan 2011
Artists have used a variety of materials over the years for sculpting. They have been quick to use unusual pieces of technology to make a vibrant and unique statement, just as painters have created and used a wide variety of colors and derived pigments for their canvases. In this article, the author discusses a design challenge that gives students a chance to design a sculpting material. It can be made from completely new materials or by using manufactured materials in a new way. This exercise is a powerful way to integrate the curricula and show the links between art and technology. This activity can become very interesting, very quickly, as students explore the creative possibilities of materials and try to express themselves.
