Slowmation Pedagogy in Senior Secondary Biology

Senior secondary students were tasked with generating slowmation representations of biological processes they had already learned about during Year 11 VCE biology. The slowmation task therefore connects work with representations to review of course material. Results indicate that students negotiated between the textbook (and some teacher-specific direction) and their representations to clarify the processes and to ensure accuracy. In a two-hour class, students remained fully engaged and developed skills in digital capture, representation construction, and knowledge of the biological process. We argue that slowmation is an effective pedagogical strategy for engaging students in the review process, which results in deepening learning.
