Developing Spatial Structuring with Quick Images
Shumway, Jessica F.; Hoggan, Jessica
Teaching Children Mathematics, v25 n5 p290-297 Mar 2019
The standards from the Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA) domain in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) build on one another across the grades (CCSSI 2010). Understanding each grade level's OA standards is necessary within the broader context of the K-grade 5 OA standards. In this article, the authors share their investigation and describe their planning and use of a series of Quick Images to provide second-grade students with extensive, meaningful, and connected experiences with arrays. Quick Images is a common routine that encourages students to visualize quantities, recognize and combine amounts, and use numbers flexibly. They used Quick Images as an activity that involves large notecards that show a quantity (e.g., a notecard with four rows of three apples), pair-share discussions with a partner about how many the students saw on the notecard, and a whole-class discussion about various strategies for how they determined the total amount.
