Presents a learning exercise to help nonnative students "make friends" with "mainstream Canadians." The exercise steers students to places where they may meet mainstream Canadians, learn proper approaches to people, carry on conversations, and express their experiences. This paper examines typical problems that students of English as a Second Language (ESL) have in expository writing, namely those involving classification criteria and hierarchical categories.
