Leading and Managing High-Performance Teams in a SEM Environment: The Overlooked Competitive Advantage
Perry, Monique
Strategic Enrollment Management Quarterly, v6 n2 p1-8 Jul 2018
Considering the strong Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) strategic and theoretical resources available to many in the enrollment management field, it's surprising to some that institutions with the best plans and resources still struggle with consistent execution. While enrollment management can be heavily influenced by factors outside of an institution's control (e.g., the economy), most of the strength and progress needed to build a high-performance enrollment management team is within the registrar's circle of control or line of leadership. Building and maintaining a high-performance team is the building block of a successful SEM organization. Throughout the trajectory of an enrollment manager's career, one may be hired into situations where one is tasked with building (or rebuilding) a SEM organization for optimal performance. This article reviews why a focus on organizational culture is a foundational step to building a high-performance team and then discusses how to start the process for managing performance (including performance challenges within a current organization); a long-term president's perspective and a focus for the future are also featured.
