Perspectives: Should Mandatory Voting Laws Be Implemented in the United States?
Ornstein, Norman; Stoilov, Vassia
Social Education, v75 n1 p12-16 Jan-Feb 2011
Many countries around the world have compulsory voting laws. In the United States, where voter turnout tends to be lower than in other developed democracies, experts wonder whether voting laws would have a positive impact. In two distinct essays, voting and elections experts Norman Ornstein and Vassia Stoilov debate the implementation of compulsory, or mandatory, federal voting laws in the United States. What effect would such laws have on voter turnout, democracy, and civic engagement? (Contains 2 notes and 4 online resources.)
