Cultivating Chrysanthemums: Tsunesaburo Makiguchi on Attitudes toward Education

Taking its title from a passage in Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's 1936 serialized essay "On Attitudes toward Education," this article introduces, contextualizes, and briefly analyzes that essay in relation to the larger Makiguchi corpus. Specifically, this article examines Makiguchi's view of the proper attitudes toward education and effective and ineffective ideologies in education. An installment of Makiguchi's essay "On Attitudes toward Education" appears for the first time in English in the current issue of "Schools: Studies in Education" in the From the Archives section.
