Being Accountable: Why Friendship, Vulnerability, and Forgiveness Matter
Pignatelli, Frank
Schools: Studies in Education, v8 n2 p215-230 Fall 2011
Regrettably, accountability has largely come to mean suffering externally imposed consequences if results on simplistic, reductive measures of success are not met. Just as worrisome, this notion of accountability is internalized, deemed inevitable, and trivializes our understanding of moral accountability. This essay is an attempt to posit an alternative. It seeks to establish a viable but by no means exhaustive framework for moral accountability in the interests of furthering an agenda that values democratic practices and habits of mind. It frames accountability as a matter of stewardship rather than surveillance. Specifically, the essay examines three aspects of moral accountability given little attention--friendship, vulnerability, and forgiveness--and considers the challenges an educator may encounter in striving for moral accountability in these ways.
