Steiner, Robert L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Provides methods by which one may include historical aspects of the growth and development of chemistry into a secondary school curriculum. Includes a selected bibliography of materials related to the history of chemistry. (CP)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Curriculum Development, Enrichment Activities, Humanistic Education

Sears, Jerry A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Outlines an experimental procedure in which an iodine radioisotope is used to determine molar combining ratios of lead and silver with the iodine. Tables and graphs show the definitive results that should be attainable. (CP)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments

Hartford, Fred; Good, Ron – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Evaluates the CHEM study topics of kinetic theory of gases, phase changes, chemical bonds, and equilibrium as to the level of cognitive development required for an understanding of each subject. Advocates an assignment of topics within the range of a student's cognitive ability in an individual study format of instruction. (CP)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Cognitive Development, Content Analysis, Evaluation

Hoff, Darrel; Hoff, Adrian – School Science and Mathematics, 1978
The authors illustrate the magnitude and application of the concept of a "googol" (ten raised to the one hundred power) in searching for entities that exist in such number. (MN)

Krajcik, Joseph S.; Haney, Richard E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1987
Discusses a study that examined which reasoning patterns are necessary for success in high school chemistry. Based on student (N=170) scores from the "Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning," it was revealed that students who use formal reasoning patterns are capable of greater achievement in chemistry. (ML)

Ogden, William R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Presented is the 1921-1945 portion of a three part presentation outlining the effect of major committee reports upon secondary school chemistry teaching objectives during the period 1893-1975. (SL)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Educational Objectives, History, Science Education

Walker, Noojin – School Science and Mathematics, 1977
Methods for determining the radius of an atom are described. Unlike a previous article which approached the problem from an elementary perspective, this article examines a progression of increasingly sophisticated determinations. (CS)

Coulter, David – School Science and Mathematics, 1981
A study to investigate one of the mechanisms teachers may use to convince themselves incorrectly that students have learned science concepts requiring formal operational ability is presented. The investigation indicates instructors may actually teach and test for memorization of algorithms rather than understanding. (MP)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Chemistry, Educational Research, Learning Theories

Arizi, Hanna J.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1980
An integrated physical science course of approximately 40 instructional hours for eighth graders is described. The materials and text were prepared in accordance with the overall program for secondary school science drawn up by the Israeli Ministry of Education. (Author/MK)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Curriculum Development, Electricity, Integrated Curriculum

Yager, Robert E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Investigated is the value of preliminary high school experiences in physics and chemistry. Results indicate that the grades of students with more high school experience are no better than those of students with less experience and that less experienced students spend more time studying and take better advantage of tutors. (CW)
