Legislative Review. A Look at Higher Education in Week 6: February 9-13, 2009

This issue of "Legislative Review" takes a look at the news in higher education from February 9 to 13, 2009. This Legislative Review reports that: (1) the House Government and Veterans Affairs Committee acted on HB 1348, the concealed weapons bill, Friday, February 13. The House will consider the proposed amendment and vote on the bill, possibly as early as the first part of next week. This bill carries tremendous implications and risk according to Chancellor Bill Goetz and should be defeated in the interest of the safety of students; (2) SB 2062, a bill to create the North Dakota Opportunity Grant Program, was re-referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee and heard by the committee Wednesday, February 11; (3) SB 2412, the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome bill, was re-referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee and heard in committee Wednesday, February 11; (4) HCR 3016, which urges school districts to offer a financial literacy course, was heard in the House Education Committee Monday, February 9 and received a unanimous "Do Pass" recommendation February 11; (5) HB 1394, a bill to provide an appropriation for financial assistance to tribally controlled community colleges, was re-referred to the House Appropriations Committee, Education and Environment Division, and heard in committee February 9; and (6) SB 2226, a bill to increase state grant program and STEM/technology occupations grants from $1,000 to $2,000, was re-referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee and considered by the committee Monday, February 9. Lists of bills passed this week and bills on the week seven agenda are also reported.
