Not Just Kid Stuff Anymore: The Economic Imperative for More Adults to Complete College
Kelly, Patrick; Strawn, Julie
National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NJ1)
From 2000 to 2008, enrollments by recent high school graduates grew faster than enrollments by adults age 25 and older (25.3 percent v. 23.6 percent). Between 2009 and 2019, this trend is expected to reverse, with adult enrollments increasing by twice as much as enrollments by traditional age students (22.6 percent vs. 9.7 percent). This paper presents statistics that show more adults are needed to complete college. Policy implications from these statistics are also discussed. Appended are: (1) Unemployment Rates by Level of Education--by State (2009); (2) Change in Jobs by Education Level by State--2008 to 2018; and (3) High School Graduates from the Past Decade and for the Future Decade.
