An Alternate Route: An Open Letter to Despairing Magnet School Students
VanArendonk, Kathryn
NCSSSMST Journal, v14 n1 p28-29 Fall 2008
This essay is an open letter to despairing magnet school students. In this essay, the author describes how she attended the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center (KAMSC) and realized that she was just not into math and science. For her, KAMSC was not part of a continuation along a straight line, but instead marked a sharp right turn away from what she initially considered to be her interests--KAMSC showed her the way forward in math and science, but it simultaneously offered her the possibility of an alternate route. It helped define her in the negative space of what it was not, and it was undoubtedly one of the most influential and significant educational experiences she has ever had.
