[Developing Multicultural Education Programs.] Special Edition: Handbook Number 2.
Multicultural Education Journal, v4 n1 Apr 1986.
This handbook is the second in a series designed to aid teachers in developing a multicultural education curriculum. It is divided into two parts. Part 1, consisting of seven chapters, covers aspects of Canadian cultural diversity, and suggests activities for acquainting students with the various cultures native to Canada: (1) celebrations; (2) reading about these cultures and meeting people of different backgrounds; (3) creating case studies of individuals with different cultural backgrounds; (4) consciousness raising; (5) conciliation/adjustment; (6) communication; and (7) caring. The purpose of all the activities recommended is to foster acceptance of diversity. Part 2 is specifically oriented to the school and the classroom. Chapters 8-12 outline five steps for organizing a formal multicultural school program: (1) determining the need for such a program; (2) deciding on the nature of the program; (3) obtaining participant endorsement; (4) identifying resources; and (5) evaluating the undertaking. A brief concluding section deals with the kinds of attitudes to adopt to assure success. The appendix consists of a list of contributors to the handbook, and various resources (public institutions, reading materials, audio-visuals) are cited throughout the manual. (PS)
