Art Leads a School's Renaissance
Bowman, Gary
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v29 n3 p44-47 Fall 2017
Noah Kocina is an artist, an experienced Montessori Lower Elementary teacher, and the full-time art specialist at California Montessori Project--Carmichael (CMP-CAR), in Carmichael, California. His passion for creating a beautiful environment is immediately apparent at the CMP-CAR campus: Collaborative art projects fill the classrooms, hallways, and exterior doors and walls. Noah has been the driving force behind CMP-CAR's renaissance, beginning with the school's move to its current 70,000-square-foot facility, in 2011. At that time, the campus, constructed in the 1950s, was dilapidated. While numerous renovations were underway to address infrastructure issues, Noah collaborated with students, parents, and staff to roll out beautification projects over the summer. This article discusses how the campus beautification project led to Noah being offered the newly created position of full-time art specialist at the CMP-CAR campus.
