"Going Out" in the Upper Elementary Classroom
Pullman, Stephanie
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v28 n2 p39-43 Sum 2016
The article examines the Going Out program for the 9-12 class at Montessori Greenhouse, in Garden Grove, CA. In this program, the sixth-year students plan outings into the community based on their interests and current studies. Teachers encourage students to be as independent as possible in both the planning and execution of their excursions; this serves as another step toward greater independence and responsibility. The design of a Going Out program will vary from school to school, with the location of the school often dictating the guidelines of the program. Ideally, Maria Montessori meant for the children to go out into the community without an adult, for example, to shop for a project or visit the local library to gather further information on a topic of study. When she was given the task of redesigning the school's Going Out program, Stephanie Pullman knew she wanted to make it a meaningful and rich experience. She wanted the activities and tasks to be different from anything students had done before, while still drawing on the abilities they had gained over their years in Montessori thus far. She was inspired by Montessori's statement about reaching Elementary children on a deeper level: "Now we must appeal to his soul. To speak to him is not enough for this; what he learns must be interesting, fascinating. We must give him grandeur. To begin with, let us present him with the world" (Montessori, 2007, p. 20).
