Learning-Oriented Leadership Cultivates Teacher Leaders
Drago-Severson, Ellie; O'Connor, Christy Joswick
Learning Professional, v44 n1 p56-58 Feb 2023
Building capacity by focusing on teacher leaders and supporting their development is an important part of the solution for managing the challenges facing education today. To meet the need for collaboration between principals and teachers, the authors have created a developmental approach they call learning-oriented leadership that principals and district leaders can use to cultivate teacher leadership in their schools and districts. The model leverages four distinct yet interrelated practices for growing internal capacity: (1) teaming; (2) inviting colleagues into leadership roles (to share and lift leadership); (3) engaging in collegial inquiry; and (4) mentoring/developmental coaching.
