Working Independently: One Librarian's Experiences Flying Solo in an Independent School's Library
Cherry, Wayne R., Jr.
Knowledge Quest, v40 n2 p60-64 Nov-Dec 2011
As the solo school librarian in a modestly sized private school, the author is responsible not only for managing the school library, but also for many other things that come his way throughout the school year. Among the many balls the author has to keep in the air are budgeting, collection development, weeding, lesson planning, fundraising, and professional involvement. To round out his responsibilities, add teaching a half-day of United States history in middle school, completing internal projects assigned to him, and directing the middle school play. The real trick for him has not been keeping the balls in the air, but rather how long to hold on to any one individual ball before throwing it back up and focusing on catching the next. The best advice the author could give to a solo school librarian would be to get involved--both in the community one serves and in the professional community in one's area--and to increase stakeholders' awareness of the needs of the school library.
