Chapter 4: A Comparison of Personal Attributes and Experiences among Physically Active and Inactive Children
Castelli, Darla M.; Erwin, Heather E.
Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, v26 n4 p375-389 Oct 2007
In this study, the researchers aim to compare the personal attributes and experiences of children who met or exceeded physical activity guidelines with those who did not. By creating profiles, the researchers could compare motor performance, physical fitness, self-efficacy, time spent outdoors during physical activity, social support from friends and family, and other personal characteristics. The children selected for this study were volunteers recruited from a community-based physical activity program. As such, the inactive children in this study were not completely sedentary over the entire summer. Overall, the study suggests that physical activity participation was a by-product of many factors. Regardless of gender, physically active children were likely to be motor competent, physically fit, enrolled in more physical education during the school year, members of multiple community-based sports programs, and recipients of instruction from various individuals (parents, youth sport coaches, physical education teachers). Supporting previous research (Adkins et al., 2004), family members played a vital role in participation in physical activity. By describing the characteristics of children in a community-based physical activity program offered during the summer, the researchers hope to inform physical educators and teacher educators of how best to structure potential community-school interventions.
