Scaffolding Space to Speak: Student Storytelling as Long-Term Strategy for Developing Faculty Cultural Competence
Miller, Amanda Jayne; O'Daniel, Alyson
Journal of Faculty Development, v33 n2 p63-68 May 2019
Storytelling is an underutilized medium for empowering underrepresented students and promoting faculty development. Following a faculty development panel on supporting black and Latinx students which left both attendees and panelists wanting deeper insights into students' negative experiences of campus culture, we helped students create a video about their experiences. We found that, not only can use of storytelling media deepen perspectives about the student experience, but it can also enable faculty to use our power to better help students exercise theirs (Cook-Sather, 2002).
