Peers for Promotion: Achieving Academic Advancement through Facilitated Peer Mentoring
Ockene, Judith K.; Milner, Robert J.; Thorndyke, Luanne E.; Congdon, John; Cain, Joanna M.
Journal of Faculty Development, v31 n3 p5-13 Sep 2017
The promotion process is challenging, particularly for non-tenure track faculty in academic medicine. To address this challenge, we implemented a facilitated peer mentoring program that included a structured curriculum with regular meetings, guided by two senior faculty mentors. Participants expressed satisfaction with the program, showed increased confidence in knowledge and skills, and achieved promotion at over twice the rate of comparable non-participants. Facilitated peer mentoring is an efficient and effective approach to guide faculty successfully through the promotion process. This programmatic framework can serve as a model in academic health centers and institutions of higher learning. Mentoring, advancement, academic medicine, functional mentoring, facilitated peer mentoring.
