Providing Structure, Building Community, and Closing the Loop: Faculty Development in FYE Courses
Swank, Lorett; Whitton, Natasha
Journal of Faculty Development, v33 n3 p7-12 Sep 2019
This article focuses on techniques used in professional development to strengthen the community of faculty in FYE courses, while aiming at improving the classroom experience for today's learners, specifically those related to providing content, building community, and strengthening understanding. To provide a solid foundation, creating a course with a shared philosophy and measurable learning objectives is discussed, as well as the importance of creating community with monthly meetings, small group gatherings, listening groups, and common reads. The understanding of first-year student development, the connection between FYE faculty and their students, and the importance of technology as a key role are also suggested for optimal faculty growth and development.
