Morphemes, the smallest meaning-bearing units of language, recur in many words. Therefore, morphological knowledge can facilitate the comprehension of novel words. This study tested the effectiveness of a morphological training program on children's learning and retention of exposed words and morphologically related unexposed words compared with…

Skar, Gustaf Bernhard Uno; Graham, Steve; Huebner, Alan – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2022
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the sudden cancellation of in-class instruction for many students around the world presented an unprecedented disruption in children's education. As the COVID-19 pandemic took form, multiple concerns were raised about the potential negative impact on students' learning. The current study…

Keller, Lena; Preckel, Franzis; Brunner, Martin – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2021
It is well-documented that academic achievement is associated with students' self-perceptions of their academic abilities, that is, their academic self-concepts. However, low-achieving students may apply self-protective strategies to maintain a favorable academic self-concept when evaluating their academic abilities. Consequently, the relation…

McTigue, Erin M.; Schwippert, Knut; Uppstad, Per Henning; Lundetrae, Kjersti; Solheim, Oddny Judith – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2021
Research consistently documents that girls outperform boys in literacy achievement, yet, when considering the starting point--early literacy--we do not have consensus on the origin, meaningful nature, or persistence of such differences. In this two-part study analyzing 5,816 Norwegian students (48.1% girls, average age of 6.1 years), we first…

Eichmann, Beate; Goldhammer, Frank; Greiff, Samuel; Brandhuber, Liene; Naumann, Johannes – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2020
In large-scale assessments, performance differences across different groups are regularly found. These group differences (e.g., gender differences) are often relevant for educational policy decisions and measures. However, the formation of these group differences usually remains unclear. We propose an approach for investigating this formation by…

Hjetland, Hanne Naess; Lervåg, Arne; Lyster, Solveig-Alma Halaas; Hagtvet, Bente Eriksen; Hulme, Charles; Melby-Lervåg, Monica – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2019
The two major determinants of reading comprehension are language comprehension and decoding, but prior studies of the development of reading comprehension from an early age show inconsistent results. To clarify these inconsistencies we report a 6-year longitudinal study (starting at Age 4 years) where we control for measurement error and track the…

Parker, Philip D.; Marsh, Herbert W.; Guo, Jiesi; Anders, Jake; Shure, Nikki; Dicke, Theresa – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2018
In this paper, we develop an information distortion model (IDM) of social class differences in self-beliefs and values. The IDM combines psychological biases on frame-of-reference effects with sociological foci on ability stratification. This combination is hypothesized to lead to working-class children having more positive math self-beliefs and…

McCrudden, Matthew T.; Stenseth, Tonje; Bråten, Ivar; Strømsø, Helge I. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2016
This mixed methods study investigated the extent to which author expertise and content relevance were salient to secondary Norwegian students (N = 153) when they selected documents that pertained to more familiar and less familiar topics. Quantitative results indicated that author expertise was more salient for the less familiar topic (nuclear…

Skaalvik, Einar M.; Skaalvik, Sidsel – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2007
In this study, the authors developed and factor analyzed the Norwegian Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale. Undheim, Johan Olav – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
A simple-structure factor analysis of test data from 149 sixth-grade children in Norway was conducted. Broad factors were interpreted to represent Visualization, Speediness, and Fluency, as well as Fluid and Crystallized Intelligence. The results are discussed in relation to the Cattell-Horn theory of intelligence. (Author/JAC)

Skaalvik, Einar M. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
Two studies involving 253 Norwegian sixth and eighth graders found that self-defeating ego orientation was associated with high anxiety and negatively related to achievement and self-perception. Self-enhancing ego orientation was positively related to achievement, self-perception, and intrinsic motivation. (SLD)
