Enriching Student HIV Awareness by Digital Storytelling
Duveskog, Marcus; Sutinen, Erkki
Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, v22 n4 p383-406 Nov 2013
Secondary school students in Tanzania were involved in the development of a digital platform for HIV education and counseling. A major reason for the failure of most HIV and AIDS campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa is the lack of understanding the social structures that maintain the actual cause of the problems. Having the target group as co-designers helped to generate a platform that captures the conditions of the local context and culture. The platform has been built upon the real life stories of students. With the help of technology, students have been able to share their experiences in a way where the stories have come to life and where other students can come to learn from them. By investigating the commonly used strategies in developing and disseminating learning materials for HIV and AIDS we identified four barriers in the delivery flow of HIV and AIDS learning materials; these barriers are theoretical barrier, cultural barrier, pedagogical barrier and technical barrier. An analysis of them showed that these barriers can be lowered by including the enrichment factors of cultural relevance, ownership and a story based approach. The analysis also indicates that collaborative digital interventions help the students to enhance their awareness of HIV and AIDS by sharing their own stories.
